A Bengali Dinner at Mezban House

Gastronauts!

The winter blues are here. Bone-chilling weather, a city hall in chaos, and the impending triptych of dysfunction in our nation’s capital—if you’re looking for a reason to feel hopeful, well… good luck.

We’d love to tell you our next dinner will whisk you away from all of that. That we’ve found a peaceful, worry-free little corner of the world to escape to, even if just for a meal. But no—this month, we’re taking you to a tiny speck west of India that’s also in the middle of some serious upheaval.

In Bangladesh, young people have overturned a long rule, put a Nobel Laureate in charge, and seem to be on their way to something better—a reboot, a reinvention, a Bangladesh 2.0. But definitely major upheaval.

What better time, then, to dig into the food that fuels a revolution? (don’t you love these segues?) The bold, spicy, deeply satisfying flavors of Bangladesh—a cuisine that, much like the country itself, has been underestimated for too long.

This month, we’re heading to Elmhurst, where the lovely folks at Mezban House will make us a few special dishes. Real Bangladeshi food is finally having its moment in New York: Not the watered-down, one-size-fits-all curry house stuff; but the home-cooked, bold-flavored, unapologetically spicy Bengali food—the kind that people actually eat.

So, come warm up with us. Bring your own Booze, as this place is BARE BONES.
