Tashi deleg ‘Nauts!
It’s a tough life on the rooftop of the world. There’s the altitude (though you get used to it), the long winters (though everyone says it’s lovely), warm beer (and chunky!), and a not entirely benign Chinese presence (or occupation, but let’s not get political). And then there’s the cheese stew – which has all the best qualities of stinky tofu mixed with a week-old taleggio oatmeal. Mmmm. But how could we deny you the pleasure?
But wait, there’s more! We’ve found an amazing little joint — the most authentic Tibetan food in the city — and fittingly, to get to it you’ll have to climb … well, just a few stairs… to the top of a building in Jackson Heights. Ok, a two story building. It’s a small, little family joint, just above a Himalayan barber and next to a beauty salon, a gold buyer, watch repair, passport photo, copy center, shop-store-place that’s hard to find, but doesn’t hold back on the flavor. You’re not going to want to miss what our new friends – the husband and wife team of Chime Tendha and Dawa Lhamo – are going to cook. From tongue to tripe, dumplings to blood sausage, it’s going to be seriously tasty.
